Book I Love’s madness. Cynthia was the first, to my cost, to trap me with her eyes: I was untouched by love before then. Amor it was who lowered my gaze of endless disdain, and, feet planted, bowed my head, till he taught me, recklessly, to scorn pure girls and live without sense, and this madness has not left me for one whole year now, though I do attract divine hostility.   On Wednesday, Octo at 6 p.m., poet Sondra Gash will discuss the background of her book-length poem Silk Elegy: A Narrative Poem and read from the book. Paterson, New Jersey, once the silk weaving capital of the world and a center of radical unionism and political activity, is the setting for her work.

Silk Elegy is the story of a family fabric that is almost rent in half and its rescuing restoration, not through miracles, but through steadiness of human connection—the human weave.

Gash always keeps in mind a larger story, that of the history of anti-Semitism that brings the Bronskys to Paterson, and of Silk Elegy book beginnings of the labor movement that was to hold the silk industry accountable for its workers. The book Silk Elegy, is published by CavanKerry Press.
